Here’s a secret we just can’t resist shouting about! Let us introduce you to Bateman’s Barn South Elmham – a unique, rural Suffolk family-run wedding venue with real history of hospitality.
Tucked away on a gently wooded island, the medieval barn and covered courtyard venue sits alongside a former Bishops’ Palace (now a farmhouse home) and romantic gatehouse ruins, surrounded by organic fields and wildflower meadows full of natural colour.
Its custodian farmer owners, John and Nicole Sanderson, share values fundamental to our business, from eco-friendly practices and supporting the local community to a true dedication to serving clients and of course, an absolute passion for fantastic local food.
After a wonderful relationship with Bateman’s Barn for several years, we received an irresistible invitation to be their resident day-time caterer.

Simply beautiful inside…
Bateman’s Barn South Elmham dates from 1270. Lovingly restored by its owners for future generations to enjoy, the flint, brick and timber barn is relaxed, homely and simply beautiful. It is filled with lots of natural light, has ancient oak beams, lime-washed wattle daub walls, oak flooring and is yours to dress to your own individual style.
Medieval Bateman’s Barn is licensed for indoor wedding ceremonies. It’s also a great place for music and dancing in the evening too.
The bright courtyard marquee is just perfect for wedding breakfasts or receptions, however formal or informal your catering choices. What’s more, it is edged by a comfy lounge area, the ever well-stocked and popular Stable Bar and a terrace just made for celebratory canapés and fizz al fresco.

Who can resist the adorable ‘Grace‘ by an ancient grove of trees? She’s a truly amazing little licensed garden ceremony space.
But then the Secret Garden is a popular outdoor spot for country wedding ceremonies on this historic South Elmham ‘island’ too…
Surrounding the wedding barn are a sunny terrace and romantic ruined gatehouse, plus two acres of secluded gardens, woodland and lawns – ideal for garden games, sparklers and a primeval fire pit.
Venture just across the moat and the fields, wildflower meadows and rustic farm buildings also make stunning backdrops for those all-important photographs, with or without a magical sunset.

Whatever level of delicious dining you choose to share – from a gorgeous gourmet barbecue or buffet to multi-course masterpiece, irresistible afternoon tea or a mini-feast of fizz and fine canapés – you can rest assured that everyone will be well catered for.

The wedding venue offers couples complete flexibility around evening catering.
That said, Funnells Kitchen is often a preferred evening food option .
Ask us about beautiful Beulah, our super little street food van, and to quote for bringing her along to South Elmham to continue delighting your guests with some seasonal specials.
