What type of pancake topper are you?
Happy Pancake-day to you all!
Pancake Day (or Shrove Tuesday) as it is traditionally known has become extremely popular in recent years with pancake races and pancake tossing competitions being held all across the country each year.
The earliest records of pancakes appeared in the 15th Century but it wasn’t until the 18th Century when we became a little bit more adventurous with our toppings.
So, we thought we would ask the question; What type of Pancake topper are you?
Traditional Pancake topping
The more traditional approach to the pancake topping is lemon and sugar, this is the most recognisable of all the toppings. We think that this traditional topping represents the English Pancake and in our opinion is the best way to top your pancake, after all less is more. Make sure that you lace the Pancake with a generous sprinkle of sugar and a squeeze of fresh lemon and there you have it, a traditional English Pancake.
Fruit topping
Ok so we know that Pancakes themselves are not entirely sin free with just one Pancake (without the topping) containing nearly 100 calories! But, why not include a few of your five-a-day as a Pancake topping? Strawberries, blueberries, bananas, raspberries and blackberries all work well as a delicious and healthy Pancake topping.
Chocolate, chocolate and even more chocolate topping
So this option is very calorific but Pancake Day is one of the few days where we can over indulge, don’t you think? We have compiled a list of our favourite chocolate toppings;
- Nutella
- Cadbury’s Creme Egg (well it is nearly Easter)
- Chocolate sauce
- White chocolate
We are not saying to try all these toppings together but who knows it could work… but it maybe best to stick to just one.
If you want to be really adventurous you could add a couple of teaspoons of cocoa powder in with your Pancake mix to make it extra… chocolately.
Savoury Pancakes
Savoury Pancakes also date back to the 15th Century and there are some delicious savoury fillings out there to try.
Cheese is a very popular savoury Pancake filling and is also very easy to do. You can use a variety of cheeses from Feta Cheese to Stilton and Brie, delicious!
Meat fillings such as chicken can also be used and are also easy to make. Just think you could even have a savoury Pancake to start and then finish your dinner with a sweet Pancake, YUM!
Have you decided what type of Pancake topper you are?
Good luck to all who will be making Pancakes and please share them with us on our Facebook Page. We look forward to seeing them!
